Im historischen Kartenbestand der ULB bilden die Werke flämisch-niederländischer Kartographen einen Schwerpunkt: Willem Blaeuw, Jodocus Hondius, Jan Jansson, Lucas Jacob Waghenaer und vor allem Gerhard Mercator. Der Textdruck ihrer Atlanten wurde in Düsseldorf ausgeführt. In Köln entwickelte sich in der zweiten Hälfte des 16. Jahrhunderts mit Johannes Metellus und Matthias Quad eine eigenständige kartographische Tradition, die ebenfalls im Bestand präsent ist. Die Ende des 18. Jahrhunderts erschienenen sehr exakten Rheinlaufkarten des kurpfälzischen Wasserbaumeisters im Herzogtum Berg, Carl Friedrich von Wiebeking, stellen den letzten Höhepunkt der regionalen Kartographie-Tradition dar.
